[Advertising Creativity, Level two]
What areas of communication have you worked in?
Advertising, Design, PR, Corporate identity.
What are the most important skills needed to work in these industries?
Creative talent, The ability to think laterally and see things (& problems)
differently from everyone else.
What personal qualities do you think employers look for?
Domain specific talent and ability to do the job, Good interpersonal skills
and the ability to get on with people (I personally would not hire anyone I
couldn't get on with or didn't strike me as a nice person regardless of
talent).
What would impress you most on a C.V.?
Work experience and a CV which isn't obviously padded out with everything
from brownie badges to swimming certificates. Have something different to
say about yourself which won't be on all the other CV's they're looking at
that afternoon.
What part of work in the industry did you most enjoy, and why?
Having ideas for ads. You feel like a superstar when you have a great idea
that gets accepted and goes to print so that everyone else can see it. The
actual moment you have the idea is really exciting!
What is the most important practical skill we should remember from the unit
you taught us?
A lot of students need to understand the difference between creative and
strategic roles in advertising and also that you really need to do both to
really make an impact in the industry.
The capacity to look at advertising with a critical, objective view... to
understand and be able to rationalize it. Also... to have an opinion about
it... regardless of how popular or unpopular that opinion is... and to be
able to articulate it.
